UGC NET 2024 Exam Cancelled: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has decided to cancel the UGC NET 2024 examination conducted by National Test Agency (NTA) a day after the examination is conducted stating, ‘integrity of the examination may have been compromised’.
The UGC NET 2024 Exam was conducted on June 18, 2024 by National Test Agency across 317 exam centres around the nation. Lakhs of students appear for the UGC NET 2024 examination.
Upon receiving the feedback, the integrity of the UGC NET 2024 examination might have been compromised, the NTA has decided to reschedule the examination. The exam date of the reschedule UGC NET 2024 examination has not been released yet. The NTA is still deciding on the date and the procedure to conduct the examination without any hindrance.
UGC NET 2024 Exam Cancelled Update
As per NTA’s statement on X, the examination will be freshly conducted, the matter will be resolved separately. For now the matter is being handed over to the CBI for further interrogation.
Due to the previous fiasco, the time the NET (National Eligibility Test) was conducted on a pen and paper mode on the single day to avoid any issue. More than 11 lakhs students had appeared for the UGC NET 2024 examination.
Hence, UGC-NET — necessary for a fresh teacher to get a starting job for teaching in Indian universities and for direct admission in a PhD programme, was the first public examination to be scrapped in the country after a new law was passed by the central government to curb paper leaks.
It also stated that considering the inputs of the exam being compromised, the investigation into the examination has been handed over to the CBI, and details about the re-exam will be provided in a separate release.
The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act passed in Parliament in February next year providing for three to five years of imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine for ‘resorting to unfair means and offences’ depending on the ‘severity of the crime,’ as stated by sources might come into operation in the instant scenario.
The ministry’s decision came as a shock unto the senior officials of NTA who conduct the UGC-NET on behalf of the UGC and are already in the eye of the storm regarding alleged malpractice related to the NEET undergraduate exam, a single point examination cum entrance tests for all MBBS courses in India.
UGC NET 2024 Examination
The UGC NET exam evaluates the Indian citizens’ eligibility to become an ‘Assistant Professor’ in universities and colleges or for the ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ posts. It is carried out by the NTA in Computer-Based Test CBT mode two time in an year, in June and December.
This post refers to the candidates who have passed the UGC NET exam and were granted an Assistant Professor position, which is eligible for them if they perform well in Paper-I and Paper-II. The Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) qualified candidates can continue research or apply for an Assistant Professor post. Indeed, governance policies or guidelines for Assistant Professors may differ across universities, colleges or state governments.

How is UGC NET Conducted?
NTA is authorized and permitted to conduct UGC NET examination. It is only conducted twice a year, specifically in the months of June and December.
In view of this therefore, the University Grants Commission “NET” has since December, 2018 and was administered by NTA in Computer Based Test (CBT). But this time for the first time ever in NET examination, it was conducted through pen and paper mode for one day i.e., June 18 after it was found that 11 lakh of students have registered for the exam.
